Copenhagen Wuzuquan Academy

Traditional Shaolin Kung Fu and effective self-defense

The club

Copenhagen Wuzuquan Academy (CWA) was founded in 2004. We teach Wuzuquan, a traditional style of Shaolin Kung Fu practiced in clubs throughout much of the world.

Our training focuses on helping members get into good shape while learning effective self-defense techniques. This is achieved through traditional Kung Fu training methods, supplemented by modern strength and cardiovascular conditioning.

At CWA, you will learn all aspects of self-defense—both mental and physical. On a mental level, we work on body language, facial expressions, and inner calm. On a physical level, we cover a full range of martial arts techniques, including strikes, kicks, throws, joint locks, and pressure-point strikes.

Additionally, you can learn techniques for internal breathing (the foundation for developing *chi*). However, this is only introduced once your basic techniques have reached a level where you can truly benefit from it.

The club also offers kickboxing training, with a focus on semi-contact point fighting. Our instructors include former national team coach Jan Rasmussen, as well as European Champion and former national team fighter David Kim Rasmussen.

CWA is a member of the Danish Kick and Thai Boxing Federation (DKTF), the Sports Confederation of Denmark (DIF), and the Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations (DGI).

Grading

Traditionally, there are no gradings in Wuzuquan (much like in many other Chinese styles).

As the system made its way to the West, various grading systems were introduced. We use a classic grading system based on sashes, where one must know a number of forms and master a range of basic techniques for each sash level.

Wuzuquan

The kung fu style Wuzuquan (Five Ancestors’ Fist) is a Chinese martial art that originated in the 13th century at the Shaolin Monastery in China’s Henan Province. While the exact timing of its transmission to the Southern Shaolin Monastery in Fujian Province remains uncertain, Wuzuquan is today classified as a Southern Chinese kung fu style; this means the system places a primary emphasis on hand techniques rather than kicks. However, this does not mean that kicks are absent or excluded from training. Wuzuquan is characterized, among other things, by soft defensive techniques that are typically followed by powerful, hard offensive techniques.

The story goes that five different masters, each possessing their own expertise, jointly developed what they found to be the ultimate system by combining their respective skills. Wuzuquan is therefore composed of the following:

Bodhidharma: Meditation and breathing techniques that help the practitioner develop chi.

Immortal: Based on explosive dynamic strength and correct stances.

Emperor Boxing: The art of striking with great accuracy and power, while using a minimum of energy.

White Crane: Many of the hand techniques—both offensive and defensive—originate from this style.

Monkey: The style’s agility and evasive maneuvers originate from this style. Many of the monkey’s hand movements are also used both offensively and defensively.
